Felicia Gill Bio- Career Advisor at Calhoun Community College part 4 of 5

Selma AIR allowed my mother to do that for me. Momma never drove, so she had someone to pick us up to take me “us” to work and to pick us up after work. When I felt good enough to get out into the communities (8 counties in very rural parts of the Black Belt of Alabama) to educate, test and get those infected into care.  Mom got me my first cell phone which I still have the number for until this very day to stay in touch with me while on the road.  I stayed with Selma AIR for almost 12 years. One day when Selma AIR was being audited, AIDS Alabama stopped the auditing process, and asked to interview me for a career opportunity with AIDS Alabama working from the top of the state to the bottom because of my outstanding work at Selma AIR. I accepted the offer to move to Birmingham, Alabama to work at AIDS Alabama. I decided on my last day with Selma AIR not to go to Birmingham due to the gang activity in the city.

I was not willing to take a chance on losing my son to gang violence. My son was an only child looking for something to believe in. I could not wrap my thoughts around leaving my son at home while I made my money by traveling up and down the state ad leaving him unattended for long periods of time. I never trusted my son around to many family members because of his learning disability which I fought violently for. God confirmed with me that I could not take the job at AIDS Alabama, and I could not go back to Selma AIR either. WHAT YOU SAY GOD??

El and I were homeless in our home town for almost two years. Mom was living in apartments for seniors and Kin and her daughter was with momma. Later, I began working for Concordia College Alabama, same as Concordia College Selma. I started out by working two hours a day to full-time in about six months. Momma always stayed behind me to get a Masters. I couldn’t see myself back in school.  After a while of being around so many others with higher education, I decided to go for a Master’s degree. I chose to pursue my Master’s in the next level for Human Resources, MPA. Masters’ of Public Administration with emphasis in non-profits. I did not choose my degree to be able to teach at Concordia, but to start my own non-profit which is in the making today.
