Leovetta Childrey - How I Chose Accounting as My Career part 3 of 3

Finally someone from the State called me while I was at work asking if I was still was interested in an Accounts Examiner job I had applied and interviewed for a year earlier. I told him I was still interested and he faxed me a letter confirming my appointment that day.
This job was basically performing audits. We use governmental/industry standards and regulations to provide reasonable assurance that the financials are free of material misstatements and that they present fairly the financial position of the State. We also audit individual agencies for compliance with grants, contracts and state and federal laws. These are forever changing. So, we have to obtain continuous education credits each year. I’ve worked with the same agency for the past 25 plus years. The benefits (insurance, retirement, and paid leave) are good. While working with the agency, our agency head encouraged us to obtain our CPA (certification as a Certified Public Accountant). So, I studied and took the test. The four parts of the CPA exam are: • Auditing and Attestation (AUD) • Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) • Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) • Regulation (REG) (includes federal taxation, ethics and business law)
It was difficult. My husband’s friend passed the Bar Exam and decided he’d also take the CPA exam. He was shocked he didn’t pass it. It took me more than one attempt to pass all parts of the exam but I passed in 1999 and got my certificate in 2000. During my career with the State, I’ve been promoted three times. I’m currently an Audit Manager. So, there is room for growth in this profession. The accounting profession I know is changing. Below are five new trends for the accounting profession: 1. Focus on Data Analytics 2. Automation and Artificial Intelligence 3. Cloud Accounting 4. Outsourcing 5. Blockchain. I encourage anyone interested in any career to research it thoroughly, seek out grants and scholarships to finance your education and seek out internships or co-ops. If you’re interested in accounting/auditing and have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me. Love, Cookie
